Ladera Ranch Transportation Issues Raised at Public Meeting
Ladera Ranch residents were among the 300 area residents who turned out to have their say about major transportation policy and traffic congestion relief strategies during a Town Hall forum with Orange County Supervisor Pat Bates and Representatives of the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) on Tuesday, July 15. The meeting, which was held in the Ladera Ranch Elementary School multi-purpose room from 6:00 to 9:00 pm gave residents an opportunity to express their disapproval of any plans to extend Rt. 73 through Ladera Ranch to the 241 toll road, although aurhorities in attendance said this was just one of many options being considered to relieve traffic gridlock as the area continues to grow over the next 20 years. Supervisor Bates told the gathering she heard their concerns "loud and clear." The gathering was also shocked to learn that the Crown Valley Parkway widening project will not be complete until September of 2009, about 2 years later than the 18 months the project was supposed to take to complete. Chuck Gibson, President of the Ladera Ranch Transportation Club, and Danielle Blugrind, gave a report on the 2008 Ladera Ranch Traffic Issues and Transportation Survey. Supervisor Bates addressed the audience on significant transportation matters affecting Ladera Ranch residents including aspects of the South County Major Investment Study (SOCMIS) which is nearing completion. OCTA staff will present their recommendations concerning a "Locally Preferred Strategy (LPS)" to implement SOCMIS. Supervisor Bates is chair of the Policy Advisory Committee (PAC) that will consider what to finally recommend to the OCTA Board concerning the LPS strategy. Details on the meeting will be published in the August issue of the Ladera Times in an article wriotten by Chuck Gibson. To learn more about the SOCMIS study process please see www.octa.net/socmis.aspx. Additional documents are also posted on the Ladera ranch Transportation Club website, LaderaTransportation.com.

The "Focus On" video series marks a milestone one-year anniversary with the release of a sixth episode featuring the community of Ladera Ranch on www.laderalife.com (link is in scroll-down menu under "Live.". The newest episode explores the Certified Farmers’ Market that takes place at the Town Green Park every Saturday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Market Manager, Ruth Jaime of Jaime Farms, shown left being interviewed by series host and executive producer Jeff Blugrind, explains, "at our market, certified products are grown or processed in California by the farmers who sell them directly to you." The video adventure includes a trip to the farm where some of the produce is grown, and a tour of the ranch in Trabuco Canyon where the cattle are raised for the grass-fed beef that is sold at the market. Jeff Blugrind interviews many of the farmers at the market about their products. The market also includes a curb-side recycling center where residents can dispose of household batteries, light bulbs, plastic bottles, glass bottles, plastic bags and cans (see story below). "I looked forward to producing this episode because I have regularly shopped at the Farmers’ Market since it opened and wanted to share the story of the experience with my fellow residents. "People stop me all the time at the grocery story and at Chaparral Elementary School to say how much they enjoy the series, and how they especially look forward to the bloopers at the end." says Blugrind, who produces all of the "Focus On: Ladera Ranch" episodes as a volunteer. "Focus On: Ladera Ranch" releases a new program every other month that provides a behind-the-scenes look at the world-class technology and amenities in Ladera Ranch.

Voters Recall CUSD Trustees Benecke and Draper and Replace them with Palazzo and Maddox in June 24 Special Election
Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) voters overwhelmingly recalled school board trustees Sheila Benecke and Marlene Draper during a special election on June 24 and elected Sue Palazzo and Ken Maddox to complete their terms. The two new trustees join existing trustees Ellen Addonizio, Anna Bryson and Larry Christensen to create a five-member majority on the seven-member school board. A five were supported by a group called the CUSD Recall Committee, which campaigned on a promise of restoring honesty, integrity and accountability to the district. The newly-elected trustees will fill out the terms of the recalled trustees, which will be up for election in November, leading some critics to question the need to spend $700,000 tax dollars on a special election with the regular election just a few months away.

Wellhead Files Suit to Rescind Peaker Plant Application,
Taking Issue with Implications It Provided Inaccurate Info
The Ladera Times has learned that Wellhead Power Margarita, the company hired by San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) to construct a peaker plant on SDG&E’s substation property across Antonio Boulevard from Ladera Ranch, has asked Orange County to rescind Wellhead’s site development permit and variance approved by the County Planning Department in November 2007, making the application process "moot." In a nine-page document filed with the California Superior Court, Orange County Civil Complex Center, Wellhead said it is compelled to respond to assertions made in Orange County’s May 13 Status Confirmation Statement, and unequivocally denies the implications that it has provided the County, Ladera Hope, and the public with inaccurate information or has misrepresented the proposed peaker plant project in any way. "Wellhead has been in the energy business for 25 years and has obtained over 40 land use and air permits for power plant and other energy facilities from numerous local agencies and air districts throughout the State of California during the company’s lifetime," the filing says. "Not once during the company’s lifetime has Wellhead ever been accused of engaging in misrepresentation by any party, much less by a government agency such as (Orange) County." Ladera Hope Comes Out of Its ‘Quiet Period’ to Accuse
SDG&E of Not Being Truthful About the Peaker Plant
By Kim Sprague,
Several hundred residents packed into the Ladera Ranch Elementary multi-purpose room Tuesday evening, May 13, anxious to be updated regarding the proposed Margarita peaker plant. The community group known as, Ladera Hope, was finally able to share the information gathered during the past two months of fact finding, a “quiet period” in which both parties agreed to refrain from public comment. Elizabeth Hall (photo right), Ladera Hope Board President, received thunderous applause when she announced that the County of Orange Board of Supervisors has determined that the CEQA process was not followed properly, and San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) and Wellhead Margarita, the company contracted by SDG&E to build the peaker plant, will need to start fresh in submitting plans for the legal permit approvals to build the plant. Ladera Hope volunteers went on to explain that the County had found SDG&E to be deceptive in many areas, including their physical depiction of the plant, their intent to expand the plant, the environmental impact, and the lack of public notification. Over 20,000 Pack Founders Park for 4th Annual Taste of Ladera
May 3 was a perfect day, weather-wise and otherwise, as 22,000 fun seekers (11,000 paying customers and at least that many children under 12)  packed Founders Park for the fourth annual Taste of Ladera, more than doubling last year’s turnout of 10,000. Ladera Ranch residents and people from neighboring communities came out to taste some great food, see all the exhibits, support the charities involved, have some fun and games, see the Ladera’s Got Talent contestants, meet the Housewives of Orange County, and enjoy the non-stop music of several great bands, including the Go Sheilas, Hollywood U2, and Berlin. The Cobles Have Three Healthy Triplets: Ashley, Ellie and Jake
Very reliable sources have informed the Ladera Times that Lori Coble gave birth by C-section to three healthy triplets beginning with Ashley at 9:42 pm, weighing in at 3 lbs. 8 oz., followed by Ellie one minute later weighing an even 4 lbs., and Jake at 9:44 pm, weighing 3 lbs. 14 oz. Mother and babies are all doing well.  Lori and her husband Chris suffered an unthinkable loss almost a year ago on May 4 when their three children -- Kyle, Emma, and Katie -- were killed in a horrific accident on southbound I-5 near the Oso Parkway exit. In an exclusive interview with the Ladera Times last December (see photo), the Cobles said they were meant to be parents, and proceeded to use in vitro fertilization to get Lori pregnant. When three of the 10 eggs survived, two girls and a boy, the Cobles felt it was a sign and had all three eggs implanted. Once the Ladera Times broke the story of the pending triplets the news swept around the world . . . and the community has been anxiously awaiting news of the births ever since. During the December interview, Lori said they would give the newborns the same middle names of their siblings. More details will be posted as they become available. Ladera's Boo Boo Busters Highlighted in 'Baby Mama' Movie
Boo Boo Busters™ Professional Babyproofing Services is highlighted in the just-released feature film "Baby Mama," starring Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Signourney Weaver, and Greg Kinnear. The lead character’s plan to babyproof her home early (during pregnancy) sends an enlightening and conscientious message to expectant parents about being proactive regarding child injury prevention in the home. "I love it when a movie sends a message that can actually save lives!" explains Kimberlee Mitchell, Child Safety Guru and owner of Boo Boo Busters Professional Babyproofing Services, located in Ladera Ranch. "Albeit comedic in the film, it’s wise to start the process of babyproofing your home before you bring your newborn home. But more often than not, many parents get caught up with a busy new lifestyle with a new baby subsequently waiting too long to babyproof and traumatic accidents happen. Hopefully this film will plant the seed in the minds of expecting parents across the nation to be proactive and babyproof early."

Bill Lawson Appointed to Santa Margarita Water District Board
Former LARMAC President Bill Lawson has been named to serve on the Santa Margarita Water District (SMWD) Board of Directors, filling the seat left vacant by the death of longtime SMWD board member, Sam Johnson. "It is a privilege to continue to serve the community and to have been entrusted with such a great responsibility," said Lawson. "As a public servant, I was very encouraged to see such great interest from so many qualified individuals," said SMWD Board President Roger Faubel. "There were many well qualified candidates, so this was not an easy decision. But in the end, it was with both deliberation and unanimity that we selected Mr. Lawson to serve." In December of 1999, Mr. Lawson’s family was one of the first to move in to the Ladera Ranch community where he continues to live with his wife Tina and two children, Logan 10, and Bailey 7. Mr. Lawson is a founding principal with the planning and engineering firm Urban Crossroads, Inc. He served on the Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corporation Board from 2000 through 2006 and oversaw the City of Rancho Santa Margarita’s incorporation as director of the Cityhood Committee from 1997 to 2000. In addition, Lawson is a certified Professional Transportation Planner, a registered member of the American Institute of Certified Planners as well as the Institute of Noise Control Engineers.

Bikers Raising Money to Help Dying Ladera Ranch Mother Were
Stunned when Danielle Camacho Showed Up to Thank Them

Danielle Camacho, 38, our Ladera Ranch mother who is dying of Lou Gehrig's Disease, brought tears to hundreds of leather-tough bikers when she showed up to thank them for the money they are helping to raise for her two daughters' educations. The bikers rode on April 12 from the California Harley-Davidson/Buell dealership in Harbor City, and from Anaheim-Fullerton Harley-Davidson dealership in Fullerton to Newport Rib Company in the Mercantile East Shopping Plaza to raise money for the Camacho Children's Education Fund. Danielle Camacho showed up with her family to thank the gathering for their generous outpouring of help. She is shown above in tears as members of the Black Sheep tribe led the assembly in a prayer. The Black Sheep know first-hand the devastation of ALS as they recently lost a brother to the illness, a motor neuron disease that has no known cure.  After a year of misdiagnosis, Danielle finally received the verdict and was given three to five years to live. And, sadly, the reality is that Danielle is in the third year since the disease was diagnosed and her condition is rapidly deteriorating. While the disease usually strikes older people, the younger the victim, the more agressive the disease. Danielle, who is in constant pain, won't take pain medications because she wants to be alert during her final days, which she and her husband, Alfred, also 38, have devoted to ensuring that their two daughters, Brittney, 14 (left), and Jessica, 11, are able to continue their Catholic school education. Once word spread throughout the community, residents and businesses have stepped up to assist the family in their time of need. For more details on this gripping story, please click on Danielle Camacho Fights for Her Children. In addition, Chris Behar Consulting Associates has created a fundraising website for the Camacho Children's Education Fund, at which donors can make contributions by credit card or PayPal.

Santa Margarita District Says Ladera's Water is Safe to Drink
With recent news reports about trace amounts of pharmaceutical medications found in much of the nation's drinking water supply, the Ladera Times contacted Roger Faubel, Board of Directors President of the Santa Margarita Water District, which supplies water to Ladera Ranch, to see what affect, if any, these reports have on our community. He said there are trace amounts that come from people disposing their expired medical drugs into their toilets. But he qualified "trace amounts" by explaining that, to ingest the equivalent of one pharmaceutical pill, a person would have to drink the the equivalent of 120 olympic-size swimming pools of water. Mr. Faubel said scientists do not consider these trace amounts harmful to humans but they continue to study the situation. In the meantime, he said we can all help by properly disposing of all drugs and other substances.

Don't Fall Victim to Email Thieves Who Want to Steal Your Money
Someone who is trying to steal people's money from their PayPal accounts has been sending out an email "alerting" people that the password to their PayPal account has changed. This is a fake email message designed to sucker you into giving them the information necessary to get into your PayPal account. The message says, "The password for your PayPal account was changed. If you did not authorize this change, please use the following page and log in with your old password," and then directs you to a fake PayPal look-alike website that records your log-on name and password. The message then says, "After we verify your identity, you will be able to use your old password." The truth is, once this website has your log-on name and password, the thieves can go into your PayPal account and clean it out, and they will continue to do so as long as you have the same log-on name and password to access the account. Don't respond to the email! Instead, forward the email to
spoof@paypal.com and then delete it. This is but one example of the myriad frauds on the Internet designed to separate you from your money. If you receive any such email message, say from your bank, never respond to it. Instead, check with your bank directly and, if found to be a fraud, report it to the bank and then delete the email. Most banks and other organizations, such as eBay and PayPal, have links on their websites that you can use to forward fraudulent emails to them.

LARMAC Announces Street Light Outage Reporting Program
Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corporation (LARMAC) has established a street light reporting program in response to questions by residents about how to report street light outages in Ladera Ranch. “This new program will inform community residents about how they can report street light issues, such as outages and faulty lights, directly to San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E),” explains Dennis Javens, Town Manager of Ladera Ranch. Upon discovering a defective street light, residents are asked to call SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343 and provide name of the street and approximate location of the outage and, if possible, the street light number, which is located on a tag on the pole located at eye level or lower. Given the highly responsive nature of the community, residents are also encouraged to tie a red ribbon approximately six feet above ground level on the street light that is being reported. Red ribbons are available at the LARMAC office on
1 Daisy Street during normal hours of operation. Residents are asked to allow SDG&E five to 10 business days to make repairs. For more information, call LARMAC at 949.218.0900 or log onto to www.laderalife.com.
