Calif. Redistricting Leaves Ladera without a Senator
The state has concluded redistricting based on the 2010 Census. However, due to the election cycle, Ladera Ranch and surround communities will not have a State Senator for the 2013-14 year and some areas will have two.
This "quirk" will affect over three million Californians.
While this is disturbing, it's not the first time this has happened. Due to the staggered election schedule, this also occurred back in the 1970s. This quirk should cause us concern and heighten our awareness to how we are represented.
Most probably cannot tell you who our representatives are, However, it is important to know not only who represents our community, by what they are doing.
The Ladera Ranch Civic Council (LRCC) does keep in contact with our representatives to ensure Ladera Ranch has a voice and that we keeping track of where they are on issues that could affect our community.
You may already know, but our representatives are:
County Supervisor, Pat Bates
State Assembly, Jeff Miller
State Senator, Mimi Walters
U.S. Congressman, Ken Calvert
The Civic Council encourages all residents to check out their websites and subscribe to their newsletters (links to their websites are on Community Links).
As we enter 2012, there are many important issues facing us as individuals and as a community. Make sure you know where your representatives stand on the issues.
So where are our new districts?
Ladera Ranch will be leaving State Senate District 33 that extends north to Anaheim and La Mirada with the south end including parts of San Juan Capistrano for the new 36th District that has Ladera at the top end of a district that extends south to Encinitas. The 49th congressional district makes less sense with Ladera Ranch being at the north edge, excluding Mission Viejo and Coto de Caza, but extending south to La Jolla.
The reapportionment that groups us better with our surrounding communities is the State Assembly District. Ladera Ranch is currently in 71st District that includes Corona. The new 73rd District gives up Corona for Dana Point, San Clement, and San Juan Capistrano.
Based on these new districts we will most likely be electing some new officials. Make sure you keep up today on who will be vying to represent Ladera Ranch in future elections.
The LRCC’s next meeting will be at 7:00 pm on January 23 at the Santa Margarita Water District building.
