Ladera Ranch Hosts First-Ever Cycling Grand Prix & 5K Race
Ladera Ranch hosted its first annual Cycling Grand Prix and 5K Sunday, August 19, with presenting sponsors, Ladera Legs and Ladera Cyclery. The Grand Prix is fully sanctioned by the United States Cycling Federation with a cumulative purse of $4,500 in 9 categories. The race, which drew 268 cyclists from throughout Southern California and Nevada, has been added to the U.S. professional tour schedule. Cyclists accumulated points based on race category and finish time. The event was organized and run by Jodi Miller and Jena Schuster of Ladera Legs, and Jeff Davis, of Ladera Cyclery, and a host of volunteers, shown below, from left: Ryan Miller, Shannon Lowe, Stuart McClure, Jodi Miller, Jessica Hendrix, Jena Schuster, Jeff Davis, Tammy Lane, & Sue Shaver. Missing from the photo is Jennifer Fischel. The racing day began at 7:45 am with 330 runners in the 5K race and continued with 75 runners in a Little Legs 1K event at 8:30 am. Josh Yelsey (shown above, right breaking the winner's tape) won the 5K with a time of 16:13; John Clark took second at 17:09; and Jesse Blomberg came in third at 18:00. The first woman to cross the line was Maggie Shearer at 19:23; second was Lori Losinsky, 19:49; and third, Sita Perry, 20:12. The Grand Prix races looped around Founders Park from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and 5K runners began at Daisy Street and Sienna Parkway and finished on Sellas N. The cycling winners are: Mens Pro 1-2 1. The event ran so smoothly that event organizers are already planning next year’s event. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
